Eco-tourism

The Village Project: a 10 year undertaking 4 years ago, the local council set up the “Village Project” 2003/2013, orientated towards the future and sustainable development. This step allows future Les Gets generations to continue living with tourism, but must also henceforth teach us to fulfil our clients’ exact wishes.

This project consists of different plans of action:
• Revising town planning (the P.L.U.): the main purpose of this revision is above all to control the rate of development by not building quicker than the existing infrastructure can bear. Important building development over the last 10 years has led the local council to impose rigorous limits on planning permission as it reacts to the water shortage, despite considerable pressure for land and buildings within the village. In order to satisfy demands concerning the habitat and a good life-style, today it is important to give Les Gets an architectural identity, with projects in line with today’s ecological, safety and aesthetic standards.

• management of water resources : the village is confronted by a water shortage during certain times of the year, due to : - an important lack or rain over the last 4 years. - the development of tourism, meaning that the periods when the village is most populated coincide with the times when nature is less generous with its water. - water consumption has increased from 150 litres per person per day 20 years ago to about 250 litres per person per day in 2004.In order to compensate for this water shortage, the village has searched for underground water sources (using hydro geologists), natural lakes and artificial reservoirs, including work carried out in the summer of 2006, and looked into the use of underground water.

• Mobility management: resolving mobility problems, especially during peak season, is the principal focus of Les Gets’ good life-style policy, as we reject a ‘100% cars’ policy...

• Improving services, developing cultural activities, preserving authenticity: these are the tools for management and for local governing.

Alpine Pearls: a hall mark on a European scale

With the Mobil’Alp project, Les Gets joined the “Alpine Pearls” association at the beginning of 2006, which groups together about 20 Swiss, Austrian, German and Italian resorts -for example Interlaken and Berchtesgaden...- which undertake to make mobility chime with respect for the environment, client service and sustainable development.

“Alpine Pearls” are tourist destinations that adhere to a project of sustainable development, whose aim is to strengthen environmental protection in the Alps as far as tourism and mobility are concerned. Combining tourist services with mobility services that work in one of the major goals of this program.

Remember that the project’s origin was due in part to clients’ requests, as they became increasingly aware of environmental problems. To give an example, 20% of the German or Austrian population chooses places where ecological measures are taken. Certain English tour operators suggest, right from the first page of their brochures, destinations that take positive steps to protect the environment. The aim is therefore to attract this clientele, attached to alternative methods of transport. By undertaking such a challenge, Les Gets - the only French “Pearl”- has made up for lost time by organizing a policy of responsible tourism, caring about its clients’ well-being.

The main criteria for membership of the “Alpine Pearls” are the following:

• Have a mobility system that respects the environment and is adapted to tourist needs. Example in Les Gets: a service of free shuttle buses in the season and two little trains serving different sectors of the village.

• Have areas with limited traffic flow or pedestrians only. Example in Les Gets: organizing a semi pedestrian area in the village centre.

• Inform its clientele about special offers linked to mobility. Example in Les Gets: The ‘Mobility management centre’ website which should be operational from winter 2007.

• Easy access by bus or train from the nearest stations right up to the village. Example in Les Gets: plan to strengthen links by bus into the village and improve the understanding of transport services.

• To possess quality infrastructures, top quality accommodation certified by national standards, a cultural heritage and authentic architecture. Example in Les Gets: 2* and 3* accommodation, some of which are equivalent to 3* or 4*: the Mechanical Music Museum with its numerous instruments and its unique European collection of automatics, traditional wood and stone chalets built in a pure Savoyard style....
